Recycling
Design Source Flooring has been committed to recycling post consumer flooring for over 15 years. This is why the top manufactures have selected our company as their exclusive recycling partner for many of the cities we service.
Post-consumer carpet is reclaimed and turned back into caprolactam, the raw fiber used to make nylon 6. Type 6 nylon is used in such applications as residential and commercial carpet, as well as other products. Type 6.6 nylon, polypropylene and PET is reclaimed and used in various other products such as plastics.
Post-consumer carpet pad is reclaimed and processed back into padding for the flooring, furniture and automotive industry.
More than five billion pounds of carpet and pad are sent to the landfills annually, waste that represents 2% of total landfill volume. Design Source Flooring is actively involved in the waste-to-energy (WTE) project in Dalton, Georgia. The WTE program converts carpet and wood waste to steam and energy through a process called gasification and is the first of its kind in the industry. The waste this facility converts to energy would otherwise come from fossil fuels, so we’re sending less waste to landfills and helping to save more than 2.5 million gallons of fuel oil per year.
